About This Course

  • This course introduces students to Linguistics, the scientific study of language, and helps them understand how languages are structured, used, and preserved.
  • The course is specially meaningful in the context of Northeast India, one of the most linguistically diverse regions in the world. Students will explore not only global linguistic theories but also their own languages, cultures, and oral traditions, many of which remain under-documented.
  • This course introduces our students to sounds (Phonetics & Phonology), word formation (Morphology), sentence structure (Syntax), and meaning (Semantics)—while also examining how languages shape society.
  • The course develops the ability to build strong analytical, logical, and research skills, and highlights the growing relevance of linguistics in today’s digital world, including its role in computer science and Artificial Intelligence.

Programme Outcomes

  • Understand basic Linguistic Concepts such as Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, and Applied Linguistics, and explain how languages are structured and used.
  • Develop Analytical & Research Skills. Analyse linguistic data scientifically, identify patterns across languages, and apply these skills to competitive exams and research contexts.
