About This Course

  • To instill in the students an in-depth knowledge of linguistics as a discipline along with its history, branches, scope, and domains.

  • To enable the students to understand the major concepts, principal theories, research findings, and basic issues in the various subfields of linguistics such as Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Morphology, Semantics, Sociolinguistics, etc.

  • To develop the students' awareness of the language they speak, its status in society, and its under-researched areas.

  • To ensure that the students have a sense of social responsibility as native speakers to help preserve their languages by developing a research mindset and taking part in studying, documenting, and describing their languages.

  • To facilitate analytical and logical abilities and problem-solving skills in analysing and interpreting linguistic data.

Programme Outcomes

  • To understand the concepts of Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Synatx, and applied linguistics.

  • An aim to apply linguistic knowledge to any language irrespective of whether the student speaks that language or not.

  • Develop a sense of safeguarding a language by preserving it from language endangerment or extinction through documentation, archiving, and descriptive studies.

  • Encourage the students to go beyond and adopt forieign languages to become second language teachers.
