About The Event

The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics, Tetso College, Sovima, is organising a Five-Day Workshop on “Crafting Digital Resources for the Languages of Nagaland” from 18–22 August 2026 at Tetso College.

The workshop is a national initiative aimed at developing practical digital resources for the indigenous languages of Nagaland. It brings together language experts, community resource persons, linguists, and technical experts to explore ways of transforming linguistic materials and oral language data into useful digital resources for language learning, preservation, intergenerational transmission, and future language technologies.

The inaugural programme will be on 18 August 2026 at Radhakrishnan Hall, Tetso College.

The workshop seeks to encourage greater engagement with indigenous languages, digital humanities, language technology, and the preservation of Nagaland’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage.

Organised by: Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru
In collaboration with: Department of Linguistics, Tetso College

CONCEPT NOTE:

Northeast India is one of the most linguistically diverse regions of India, and Nagaland is home to a remarkable range of indigenous languages that represent distinct histories, identities, knowledge systems, worldviews and cultural traditions. While some of these languages have been documented through grammars, dictionaries, text collections, and educational materials, many remain under- documented. However, even where documentation exists, most indigenous languages in Nagaland remain low-resourced in the digital domain, limiting their accessibility and use in contemporary technological environments.

In today's era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and rapidly evolving digital technologies, the development of digital language resources has become increasingly important. Digital resources not only preserve linguistic knowledge but also enable languages to participate in modern communication, education, research, and technological innovation. For many indigenous languages, digital resource development represents an essential step towards ensuring their continued relevance and vitality in the twenty-first century.

Recognising this need, the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics, Tetso College, Sovima, Nagaland, is organising a Five-Day Workshop on “Crafting Digital Resources for Languages of Nagaland” as a national initiative for the digital empowerment of the languages of Nagaland.

The workshop aims to bring together language expertise, community knowledge and technological possibilities to transform existing linguistic materials and newly contributed oral and written language data into practical digital resources. These resources will support language learning, facilitate intergenerational language transmission, preserve linguistic and cultural heritage, and strengthen the digital presence of the languages of Nagaland. The initial prototypes will include a talking children's dictionary, vocabulary and word-based activities, language games, quizzes, phrase and sentence resources, listening and speaking activities, and a digital language starter kit for children, teenagers and young learners, as well as adults and heritage-language learners. The resources will be designed to grow over time, allowing additional language data and activities to be added beyond the workshop.
