BORDERLAND REVIEW (Concept Note)
AIM AND SCOPE
Borderlands, regions where distinct social, political, and economic systems converge, offer invaluable cases where prevailing orthodoxies about the conventional manners of conducting daily affairs in society blurs into an undefined zone. Yet, these borderlands across the world also provide an illegible, often obscure to our everyday lens, systems of everyday activities that are distinctively shaped by these regions alone. Activities and practices arising out of such an idiosyncratic ecological milieu, enabled by the porous international borders, permit the development of specific cross-border economic, social, and cultural cross-border practices. Thus, giving rise to societies that operate and function differently from those in the heartland, such as urban metropolises within nation-states.
Northeast India, for instance, is one such region. Nestled between four nation-states, with China to the North, Myanmar to the East, Bangladesh to the South, and Bhutan to the West, this region forms an assemblage of highly diverse people, language and culture, quite distinct from India’s heartland. The essence of these borderlands lies in their resistance to easy categorization and constant negotiation with rigid norms and practices due to the fluidity in their ethno-cultural identities.
To this end, the aim of Borderland Review is to publish original empirical research in the field of border studies on thematic areas that include borderland governance, economies, cultures, conflicts and environmental issues through diverse analytical perspectives and methodological approaches. As a journal officiated in an institution located within the borderlands of India, the journal would be ideally positioned, more than others, to perhaps bring awareness about the intricate everyday functioning and challenges of such regions across the globe often obfuscated in mainstream metropolitan literature.
In order to achieve the stated aims, the scope of this review, therefore, will encompass the entire gamut of fields related to the border studies including but not limited to developmental concepts and theories, non-traditional security issues, border governance and infrastructure, biopolitics and policy debates, anthropological insights, cultural and psychological discussions, and political theories relevant to border studies.
